Bo Pelini's seven-year run as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers has come to a close. The university fired the coach on Sunday. Nebraska defeated Iowa 37-34 on Friday and finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.

Mike Gundy No Longer Favorite For UF Job

According to media reports, Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst released a statement on Sunday morning explaining the decision.

"Earlier this morning, I informed coach Bo Pelini of our decision to move forward in a new direction," it read. "Coach Pelini served our University admirably for seven years and led our football program's transition to the Big Ten Conference."

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman said that he supported the decision and stood behind his athletic director.

"I am confident that Shawn will find the best coach, teacher and fit for this University and for our football program," said Perlman. The university has not indicated if there is a preferred candidate to take over as head coach or how soon they are looking to hire a replacement.

During his time at Nebraska, Pelini compiled a 67-27 record and won at least nine games in every season. Only the Oregon ducks have a longer streak of consecutive seasons with at least nine wins. Pelini won more games in his first seven years as head coach than anyone else in Nebraska history.

Pelini has been perceived as a coach that struggles in important games, however. Under Pelini, Nebraska was just 8-17 against ranked teams and 3-3 in bowl games. Pelini never led the Cornhuskers to a BCS bowl, and he lost his only appearance in the Big Ten Championship game 70-31.
