Cole Hamels, (1-5, 4.18 ERA) today's starter for the Phillies, has numbers that aren't pretty at first glance. Looking deeper into the stats, though, reveals that Hamels' numbers are just indicators of a poor start. Since giving up 13 runs in 10.2 innings in his first two starts, Hamels has gone at least six innings and given up three runs or less in the next six.
He has also gotten poor run support in 2013, getting three losses in games in which he has pitched at least six innings and given up three runs or less. One issue that has cropped up from time to time for Hamels, though, has been his control. He is walking nearly four batters per nine innings, the highest rate of his career.
"That's my biggest issue so far, the walks," Hamels said. "For me it's just to be able to go out, execute pitches and stop the walks. I have to correct what I can correct and that's what's going to make me a better player."
The Phillies' offense has picked up its pace in recent games, though, which is a great sign for Hamels. According to ESPN.com, have collected 10 or more hits in four of their last eight games. They are 12-4 this season in games in which they get double-digit hits.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said to reporters, "I think it's a matter of time and we can end up having a good offense."
