Torii Hunter spent the bulk of his playing career manning the outfield for the Minnesota Twins, and now the free agent could be returning to where his career began. Hunter played for the Twins from 1997-2007 before heading to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and then the Detroit Tigers.
Rangers Trading For Justin Upton?
Hunter is currently a free agent after spending two years playing for the Tigers, and the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported over the weekend that Minnesota is Hunter's preferred free agency destination. "(Twins GM) Terry Ryan and I have talked several times, and there's definitely a common interest there, for sure," said Hunter.
Hunter is also considering other destinations, although it is believed that he has a bit of a soft spot for the franchise that drafted him and gave him his first opportunity to succeed in the majors leagues.
During his time in Minnesota, Hunter was named an All-Star twice, and he won seven Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding defense. Many people remember when he famously robbed Barry Bonds of a home run in the 2002 All-Star game.
Hunter admitted that this is the toughest decision he has faced as a free agent. It seems likely that Hunter is weighing whether to sign with a contender for one final run at a World Series title. The Minnesota Twins have lost at least 90 games in four consecutive years, so he would be making a conscious decision not to chase that elusive ring if he returned to the organization, as they are unlikely to contend again before Hunter, who is 39, retires.
Torii Hunter: “I’ve been a free agent three times and this is by far the toughest decision. Do I go with my heart or my desires? . . . 1/2
