While Manny Pacquiao prepares for a pay-per-view bout Saturday night vs. Chris Algieri in Macau, China, Amir Khan is preparing for a December bout against Devon Alexander. Khan is hoping that an impressive win will lead to a pay-per-view fight vs. either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao.
Do not expect Pacquiao to be the one that faces him.
Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, who also worked with Khan earlier in his career, says that it would make no sense for Pacquiao to face him based off the results the two had in sparring sessions.
"Manny frequently put Amir on the floor, knocking him cold four or five times," Roach said of training sessions at the Wildcard gym. "There's no point Manny fighting Amir. The reality is that it's no big fight."
Pacquiao is more interested in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year, which Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said is actually closer than ever to happening provided Pacquiao beats Chris Algieri Saturday.
"The networks are already talking," Arum said. "I am now more optimistic that the fight is going to happen than I was three or four years ago. I am talking to responsible people who are in touch with the Mayweather guys. All these people have the ability to move it ahead and make it happen."
Arum has expressed optimism in the past to no avail, and frequently leaves out the fact that Mayweather has repeatedly stated he will never work with Arum to promote a fight. Another comment Arum made could be a red flag-Mayweather would have to fight outside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where he's held his last 10 fights.
"If it happens we're considering the Cowboys Stadium. It is the only venue which as the capacity to host a big show such as the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
