Yankees fans who were excited to hear that the Bronx Bombers might be willing to go after free agent ace Max Scherzer, a former Cy Young winner, might want to avert their eyes. New reports are surfacing that Yankees brass still isn't likely to add another major contract, nor surrender one of their highest draft picks in almost 20 years to bring Scherzer aboard.

The New York Daily News has reported the Yanks aren't completely ruling it out, but are saying "not right now" on the former Tigers ace. Part of the reason is that the Yankees currently have the No. 19 pick in the 2015 draft. The Yankees haven't had a Top 20 pick since 2005 and it's only the second time they've been inside the Top 20 in nearly 20 years.

Melky Cabrera's Time In Toronto Over?

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman did meet recently with Scherzer's agent Scott Boras, but The Daily News reported they were likely meeting about shortstop Stephen Drew, with Scherzer on the back burner.

New York's rotation is already expensive. In 2015 they'll have $45 million committed to Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia alone, with 27-year-old right-hander Ivan Nova arbitration-eligible.

Mariners Interested In Outfield Help Over Hanley Ramirez

The Yankees also owe $20 million-plus in 2015 to several position players; Mark Teixeira will earn $23 million, Alex Rodriguez will earn $22 million, and Jacoby Ellsbury checks in at $21 million.

The Yankees are also interested in retaining closer David Robertson, who with Dellin Betances formed one of MLB's stingiest bullpens, as well as third baseman Chase Headley and starter Brandon McCarthy.

One ace who would not cost the Yankees a draft pick is left-hander Jon Lester, but his salary will be almost as prohibitive as Scherzer's since he is coming off the best season of his career.
