Alberto Del Rio and the WWE have reached a joint-settlement that will allow the former WWE Superstar to work for AAA's Lucha Underground promotion in 2015 as it lifts his no-compete clause.
According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, the next tapings for the promotion are scheduled to take place on Jan. 17 and it could mark the debut for Del Rio, who will be wrestling under the El Patron moniker.
Del Rio has been a draw outside of the WWE, as he helped sell out an 8,000-seat arena in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico for a AAA live event, according to the report.
Del Rio was released by the WWE on Aug. 7 for slapping a social media worker who allegedly passed a racist comment about him by saying that it was Del Rio's job to clean off his plate in catering behind the former WWE Superstar's back.
There was some ugliness between the WWE and Del Rio since his departure and Del Rio appeared in a vignette that aired on AAA's TripleMania XXII event on Aug. 17. The AAA show aired on the same night as SummerSlam, and Del Rio -- calling himself El Patron -- said he would be coming to AAA very soon.
The two sides have recently worked everything out so that they can mutually part ways and the WWE sent out the following statement on the matter:
"Following his departure from WWE, former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio and WWE have reached a mutual understanding with regard to his future booking opportunities," the company said in a statement. "WWE wishes Alberto the best in his future endeavors."
Del Rio also took to his official Twitter account to release a statement of his own.
Wrestlingheadlines.com reports that part of the settlement saw the WWE lift Del Rio's no-compete clause in exchange for Del Rio ceasing to make negative comments about the WWE as it doesn't want to be painted in a racist light.
It has been announced that there was another joint settlement that included the WWE having to make a public apology, but it was eventually taken out and not pressed by Del Rio. There is also a clause where Del Rio will not sue the company based on the settlement.
Del Rio, 37, held the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship twice each during his time in the WWE.
