Charles Ramsey: With LeBron Long Gone, Hero Rescuer Emerges As New Homegrown Hero

Finally, the people of Cleveland have one of their own they can again rally behind.

Not since the days of LeBron James deciding if he would stay or flee from his hometown team have the actions of one man so enraptured the people of Cleveland. That would be Charles Ramsey, the man credited with finally putting an end to the ordeal of three young kidnap victims and freeing them from their longtime tormentors.

The self-described “dish technician” kicked down the door that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were finally able to walk through to safety earlier this week, but to hear him tell the story it was all in a day’s work.

“I’m not a hero,” he told local TV station WKYC. “I’m just like you; I work for a living… there was a woman in distress. So why turn your back on that? My father would have whooped the hell out of me if he found I cowered out.”

As the legend goes, Ramsey was walking home, minding his own business when he heard Berry beating on a window and pleading for help. After freeing her, he used his cellphone to call 911 for help.

And he still hasn’t turned his back, still seems willing to do all he can to help. All across Cleveland, T-shirts are now selling bearing Ramsey’s likeness and the salutation: “Cleveland Hero---Charles Ramsey.”

At Ramsey’s request, all the proceeds from the sells, as will any probable FBI reward, will go to the three women he helped liberate. “You gotta’ have some cojones, bro,” he told reporters. “That’s all it’s about. It’s about cojones on this planet.

Whatever it may be, Charles Ramsey has again given the people of Cleveland a hero they can cheer for.
