Alex Rodriguez's suspension for performance-enhancing drug use and his involvement in the Biogenesis steroids scandal may be over, but the black cloud hovering over him hasn't dissipated.
According to a recent report in The Daily News, it has come to light that Rodriguez reportedly paid nearly $1 million to his cousin in exchange for his silence regarding PED use and his role with Biogenesis.
According to the report, Jeffrey Sonn, Sucart's attorney, demanded $5 million and a "life estate" from A-Rod for Sucart and his wife in 2012. Eventually Rodriguez reportedly agreed to pay him $700,000 on top of three other payments that came out to $200,000.
"Given the sudden breach of your longstanding agreement with Yuri, he wishes to propose that you provide to him payment for his past services rendered, and for the loyalty he has shown you," Sonn wrote. "Therefore, Yuri requests that you now pay him for the past services rendered and to fulfill your promise to support he and his family for life. That sum is $5 million and a life estate for he and his wife in the house (free and clear of any liens or mortgages) where he is currently living."
In that letter, Sucart's lawyer also mentioned Rodriguez blaming his cousin for his steroid troubles back in 2009. "Yuri, even after he was accused of being a steroid mule for you, kept your confidences of all your activities while you played for the Rangers and the Yankees," Sonn wrote on Sucart's behalf.
Sucart is currently a defendant in a federal case against Biogenesis and its owner Anthony Bosch, and Rodriguez may be called as a witness against his cousin Yuri.
"That is what it sounds like. It sounds like A-Rod is a potential witness against his cousin," Edward O'Donnell IV, a court-appointed defender for Sucart said. "They are not allies, that's for sure, or friends."
