The Phoenix Suns are reportedly trying to coax Grant Hill into retirement with the caveat of becoming their next general manager, according to reports.
ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting the Suns are waiting for Hill to decide if he wants to return the league as a player next season or assume the aforementioned power position in their front office. Hill previously played several seasons in Phoenix and is still much beloved in the area.
What he doesn’t have, however, is any front office experience. That doesn’t seem to be much a deterrent for owner Robert Sarver and team president Lon Babby, both of whom are said to be on board with the move and aggressively pursuing the NBA vet. Babby also once served as Hill’s agent.
According to the Arizona Republic, the Suns have interviewed Milwaukee assistant GM Jeff Weltman and Boston senior assistant Ryan McDonough and are expected to settle on one of them if talks with Hill began to stall.
Once considered a surefire Hall of famer, Hill’s play has suffered in recent seasons due to persistent ankle injuries and other ailments. He has played 18 NBA seasons, spending his best years in Detroit where he averaged better than 21 points per game over six straight seasons.
