Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET, the Detroit Red Wings (4-2-2, 10 points) and Washington Capitals (4-2-2, 10 points) face-off for the first of three meetings this season live from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Detroit enters play having lost two of its last three games while Washington has also dropped two of three and will try to get its captain going.
The Red Wings are coming off of a 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday night where the team received goals from Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk.
Detroit allowed three third period goals, but overall coach Mike Babcock believed his club played a solid game.
"I thought we played a great game," Babcock said, according to NHL.com. "Even in the third period we had lots of opportunities. We didn't score."
Henrik Zetterberg has paced the Red Wings with 10 points off of three goals and seven assists this season while Niklas Kronwall is second on the team with six points off of two tallies and four helpers.
The Capitals are coming off of a 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday that saw defenseman Mike Green pick up two points in the defeat.
Green has led the Caps with eight points off of three goals and five assists while Andre Burakovsky and Nicklas Backstrom have each found the back of the net twice and added five helpers for seven points.
Washington is hoping to get captain Alex Ovechkin going as he has no points in his last four games, though he has six points overall in eight games this season off of one marker and five assists.
"It's hard to say for myself, but I just play as I can, play hard," Ovechkin told NHL.com. "If I didn't score goals, I try to do different stuff."
In net, Detroit will likely turn to Jimmy Howard, who is 3-1-2 with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage while Braden Holtby is the probable starter in the crease for Washington and is 3-1-1 with a 1.92 GAA and .922 save percentage thus far.
The Red Wings and Capitals take the ice tonight in hopes of picking up two points when the lights come up at the Verizon Center in Washington.
