The stage is set for a showdown between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer for the No. 1 ranking for the year at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals next month in London.

Ironically, it could be Djokovic trying to wrest the No. 1 ranking away from Federer.

Novak Djokovic's wife gives birth to the couple's first son

The Independent reported Monday that Federer, currently No. 2 in the world to Djokovic's No. 1, can surpass the Serb for supremacy this week at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris if the Swiss star wins the tournament and Djokovic fails to reach the final.

That scenario does not seem so far-fetched. Federer is coming off a victory at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland last week, while Djokovic is playing in his first tournament since the birth of his son, Stefan, last week.

Will ailing Spaniard Rafael Nadal retire before Roger Federer?

While Djokovic could be feeling the adrenaline rush of becoming a father, he also could be feeling the residuals of helping to take care of a newborn.

In fact, the Independent added, Djokovic has sought out the advice of Federer, who is the father of two sets of twins, on how to maintain a championship level of tennis while living up to the duties of a father.

Federer rarely makes trips to tournaments without his wife and children in tow, something that Djokovic now has to learn to adapt.

"I would like to be with my son and wife every single day, but sometimes that's not possible," Djokovic said in Paris on Monday, according to the Independent. "They will not be here this week or in London, for example, because the baby is too young to travel yet.

"But starting from next year, we'll try to be together. It's not easy, the kind of lifestyle that a tennis player has. There is a lot of travelling, a lot of hotels, a lot of planes. Of course it's not the healthiest option for a baby, because you would like your child to be in one place and have a certain routine, but we'll try to manage this situation.

"As well as Roger there are many other players in a similar situation, so I try to talk with them and get some tips or experiences that they can share with me so it can help in my own case."

At the very least, Federer knows how to play with and without kids in the stands. That's something that Djokovic has yet to experience, which could be stressful on him.
