The Denver Broncos are in the middle of another season that will likely lead to a long playoff run, but after this season they could lose one, if not two, of their top offensive weapons.
According to ESPN, the Broncos have informed wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas that they plan to put contract talks on hold until after the season.
“The Broncos have only one franchise tag to use between the two, meaning that if Denver cannot re-sign one Thomas between the end of the season and the start of free agency, the other one will be allowed to hit the market and leave if he receives a better offer.
The Broncos have negotiated with both men, but with neither close to a deal, Denver recognizes that it will have to wait until after the season to address it again.”
Reports surfaced that the Broncos' offers haven't come close to either players asking price. The problem now for the Broncos is that if they want to keep both players they will have to reward one of them with a long-term contract.
The Broncos could use the franchise tag on one of the players, but that would still call of one of them to hit the free agent market. The tight end franchise tag costs less than the wide receiver tag, so look for Denver to tag Julius Thomas and then attempt to sign Demaryius Thomas to a long term deal.
Vice president John Elway has said "This offseason, we'll have some tough decisions to make," and that could be an indication that the Broncos may have to move on from one of the two Thomases. Wide receiver Wes Welker also has an expiring contract after this season.
The Broncos' offense is averaging an incredible 31.5 points a game this season.
