Houston Texans safety Ed Reed underwent arthroscopic surgery last week to repair a labral tear in his hip, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday. Reed will be absent from the team's OTAs later this month as well as OTAs and a three-day minicamp in June, according to the newspaper. Houston is hoping he'll be ready for training camp.

"He'll miss the offseason program, and it's just something we'll have to work through," coach Gary Kubiak told the paper. "We'll get him healthy, and he should be fine. We've got to get the young safeties ready to go. They'll get a lot of reps."

Shiloh Keo, entering his third season, and D.J. Swearinger, selected in the second round of the draft last week, will get a lot more time on the practice field while Reed recovers, according to the Chronicle's John McClain.

The former defensive player of the year opted to leave the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens after 11 seasons to sign a three-year, $15 million deal with the Texans in March. Reed is a nine-time Pro Bowler and an eight-time All-Pro.

Last season, Reed recorded 58 total tackles, including 49 individual tackles, four interceptions, 15 pass deflections and a touchdown. Over the span of an 11-year career, Reed has a total of 606 tackles, including 505 individual tackles, 11 forced fumbles, 136 pass deflections, 61 interceptions and seven touchdowns.

The future Hall of Famer joins a Texans team that went 12-4 and won the AFC South in 2012 before being eliminated by the New England Patriots during the second round of the playoffs. Before the acquisition of the former All-Pro, The Texans ranked seventh in overall defense, while ranking 16th overall in passing defense. Reed will join a defense that includes reigning Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, who led the league in sacks last season.
