The University of Georgia plans to apply to the NCAA for the reinstatement of running back Todd Gurley after he was suspended for two games.

Gurley was suspended for allegedly being paid for signing memorabilia and has missed the past two games for the Bulldogs. The school released a statement about the situation on Wednesday and said they will apply for reinstatement on behalf of Gurley.

"Todd has confirmed his desire to seek reinstatement, and the University fully supports Todd's request," the university said.

Gurley is considered a Heisman Trophy candidate and many say he was the front-runner before being suspended for the alleged cash payments. Gurley released a statement as well and thanked the university and his teammates for the support they have given him.

"I want to thank the University, coaches, teammates, and the Bulldog Nation for their patience and support," Gurley said in the statement. "I take full responsibility for the mistakes I made, and I can't thank the University, my coaches, and teammates enough for supporting me throughout this process. I'm looking forward to getting back on the field with my teammates.”

Georgia is on a bye this week and will play again on November 1 against Florida. Gurley is considered the top running back prospect in the 2015 NFL draft and will very likely be a first round pick when he declares for the league.

Gurley is the SEC's rushing leader with 773 yards and eight touchdowns on 94 carries.
