War Machine's sudden suicide attempt last week came as a shock to most people, but it was not a surprise to the people who know him.

War Machine Tries to Justify Assault of Christy Mack in Suicide Letter

Michael Koppenhaver, brother to the former mixed martial artist, offered some insight to the mind-state of War Machine, born Jonathan Koppenhaver, on Monday. He posted a video on his blog FromANobody.com of his brother discussing their father's death while filming "The Ultimate Fighter" Season 6. "A small glimpse of the man and brother I know," Michael wrote. (Warning: NSFW language):

Having to witness his father's death at the age of 13 would definitely contribute to the fragile mentality of Koppenhaver. Throughout his life he has a history of violence, and carrying those demons with him probably played a big part in that.

War Machine Attempted Suicide in His Jail Cell

A suicide note was released on Monday in which Koppenhaver gives his perspective on the day he brutally assaulted ex-girlfriend Christy Mack.

He addresses Mack, born Christine Mackinday, directly and says he knew something was different about her when they broke up and got back together. He then tries to justify the assault by blaming her infidelity as the reason for his attack.

"Finding what I found that night was devastating to me, more than you will ever know," he wrote. "Not just the unfaithfulness, but the way you cared for him and protected him. Not a day goes by that I don't wish you weren't hurt that night, I hope you know that."

In probably the most shocking statement of the letter, Koppenhaver tells Mackinday, "I forgive you, I hope you forgive me."

TMZ reported Thursday that Koppenhaver tried to hang himself in his jail cell in the Clark County (Nev.) Detention Center last Tuesday night but was stopped by a corrections officer. He is being held in a medical isolation center under suicide watch.

Koppenhaver faces 32 felony counts, including two counts of attempted murder, and plead not guilty at his first court appearance in September. He is accused of attacking Mackinday and Corey Thomas in her Las Vegas home on Aug. 8. The alleged assault left Mackinday with multiple injuries including a lacerated liver, 18 broken bones and two missing teeth.
