Flip Saunders is hoping the sequel will prove to have a better ending than the original as it relates to his tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Saunders, who coached the Wolves from 1995 to 2006, confirmed to ESPN he has rejoined the organization as president of basketball operations and minority owner.
Saunders, 58, went 411-326 during his time on the sidelines in Minnesota, guiding the team to eight consecutive playoff berths before exiting and later coaching the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.
As president, he replaces David Kahn, whose contract was not picked up for renewal, the team later announced. Saunders' first order of business would seem to be the task of smoothing management's relationship with star forward Kevin Love.
Love openly clashed with the organization this season after Kahn refused to grant him a maximum five-year deal and he instead was forced to sign a four-year extension for substantially less money.
With Saunders back in the fold, owner Glen Taylor is now expected to take the team off the market. He had been looking for a buyer willing to make assurances of keeping the team in Minneapolis.
The team also indicated it plans to attempt to retain Coach Rick Adelman in his current role.
