Gennady Golovkin has the boxing world buzzing once again after a second-round knockout of veteran Marco Antonio Rubio Saturday night, and Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya took notice.
WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is the favorite to be the next opponent for Canelo Alvarez, Golden Boy's top fighter, but Golovkin may sneak in past him. ESPN's Dan Rafael tweeted yesterday "Quote from @OscarDeLaHoya to me on the phone a little while ago: "I have no doubt that Canelo will fight GGG."

Golovkin sold out the Stubhub Center very quickly in his debut fight in California, and extra seating had to be added to keep up with demand. Rafael followed that tweet with a potential scenario, in which the Cotto option remained for Cinco De Mayo weekend, with Alvarez then facing Golovkin in a September clash.

Opponents like Cotto and Golovkin might be necessary for Alvarez to wrest the Mexican holiday dates away from Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr., who has been fighting on those two weekends for years.
After defeating Rubio on Saturday, Golovkin called out Cotto before saying Alvarez was a "good boy." Cotto holds the WBC middleweight belt, and Golovkin has set out to unify the division.
"I will fight anybody. I think first Miguel Cotto," he said. "I respect Canelo, he is good, but Chavez, too. But first Miguel Cotto."
Golovkin is expected to keep busy with a fight in Monte Carlo in February, with Martin Murray as the leading candidate provided he gets past his upcoming fight with Domenico Spada.
