"It is an honor to serve on this committee, and I enjoy the group and was looking forward to the opportunity ahead," Manning said. "My health had to be my primary concern and I intend to be up and about as soon as possible.”

Manning had knee replacement surgery and now has discomfort while walking. He is expected to have surgery next month and won't be able to travel to committee meetings.

Executive director Bill Hancock spoke about the losss of Manning and thanked him for his service to this point.

"We will miss Archie," Hancock said. "He has such a great knowledge of college football and history with the game, but we all understand his reason for taking a leave. I wish him all the best and look forward to his return in 2015.”

When the committee makes their decision on the final four teams in college football, teams will compete in the semifinals (Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl) and the title game will be Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The committee is expected to name the final four teams on Dec. 4.

The committee will have 12 representatives this season after Manning’s departure and has a contingency plan in the event of a 6-6 tie.
