Today at 1:00 p.m. ET on Fox the Carolina Panthers (3-2-1) will head to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers (4-2) in an NFC clash on Fox. Carolina's defense has been vulnerable to both the run and the pass this season after it carried them to an NFC South title a year ago. The offense, however, has been surprisingly potent and they've relied on the pass for their success.
Quarterback Cam Newton returned to the rushing game last week by registering 17 carries, but he and wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin have developed a nice connection through their first six games together. Benjamin's averaged 5.2 receptions and 69.3 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, Benjamin hasn't practiced this week because of concussion symptoms and may miss this week's game. If so, the Panthers will need Newton to continue running like he did last week when he piled up 107 yards and found the end zone on the ground.
The Packers have struggled against the run this season, so Newton expects to keep pounding them.
"When you keep getting numerous yards, you have to keep calling it," Newton said. "That's just the simplicity of football. Coming into this game, I didn't think I was going to run the ball as much. But like I said, that's my attitude -- anything it takes to win, I'm willing to do."
The Packers have an interesting opportunity this week. They can choose to ride quarterback Aaron Rodgers' hot hand, or try to get running back Eddie Lacy going again against Carolina's weak run defense.
