Adrien Broner has made waves with a recent video post to his Instagram, calling out a slew of big names as possible opponents for his next fight. The name he said he wanted most was Marcos Maidana, who handed Broner his first loss in December 2013m and rode that momentum to back-to-back chances at Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"Ay man f**k the bulls**t. I wanna fight Pacquiao, Marquez, Matthysse, Maidana again. Matter of fact, I wanna fight Maidana first. I got a bone to pick, I'll beat you're a** first, get you out the way," Broner said.
The brash call-outs run counter to recent comments made by his trainer Mike Stafford, who indicated he'd like Broner to continue facing lesser opposition in order to build him back up.
"Right now we're just looking for someone to get it on with that's just like Emmanuel [Taylor]. We're just taking our time and picking the right opponents for Adrien [Broner]," Stafford said. Taylor acquitted himself well in a unanimous decision loss to Broner, but has nothing close to the resume of the names Broner wants next, several of whom are future Hall of Famers.
His declaration that he wants Maidana next is also a contradiction from statements Broner made immediately after defeating Taylor. "Listen, like I said before, I didn't 'kind of' call out nobody. I said, my next fight should be Matthysse. And he can get it!" Broner told Showtime's Jim Gray.
At the moment Pacquiao is occupied in training for an upcoming fight vs. Chris Algieri, and his trainer Freddie Roach has already made noise about moving to junior welterweight to face Danny Garcia, not Broner.
Juan Manuel Marquez has openly discussed a potential rematch with Timothy Bradley or title shot vs. Kell Brook at welterweight; Lucas Matthysse's plans are up in the air, but without a world title on the line Stafford doesn't believe a Matthysse fight is worth it for Broner.
"If he's in our way for the big prize we have to take him but ultimately we want the big prize we want a 140 pound belt and if he's in our way to get it we got to take it. We not calling out no names we just want to get to the top again and stay on the top," Stafford said.
