When Milwaukee coach Jim Boylan moved to bench star guard Brandon Jennings for the entire fourth quarter of his team’s four-game sweep at the hands of defending champ Miami, you knew his time in the “Cream City” had unquestionably run its course.
But might it also have signaled the departure of the star guard himself? After spending much of the season insisting that he was completely open to a Milwaukee return, Jennings now seems to be wavering in any such commitment.
Sure the Bucks All-Star game mightily struggled for much of the Heat series, particularly Game 4, when he shot just 1 of 7, finishing with just three points as the team dropped the tenth of last twelve games. But did the Bucks really ever have any better option?
“He's a good player and I believe in him," forward Larry Sanders, who until the waning minutes of the game continued gesturing the bench to put Jennings back on the floor told ESPN. "I knew he would give it all out,” he said. “They made a decision… it upset me a little bit, but you've got to keep pushing."
But after what seems an eternity of struggle and strife, how far might Milwaukee really go with their best seemingly again heading out the door? And it’s not as if the mercurial point man hadn’t shown some signs of maturing this season.
Following last month’s similar benching in Philadelphia, Jennings latched out at most everyone who dared to cross his path. This time, with his season again coming to a disappointing close, he took a far more refined approach.
"I tried to stay positive because we were still in the game," Jennings said in his post-game news conference. “It was out of my control." But this time, he holds most all the cards. As a restricted free agent, he is eligible to receive an offer from all the league’s other 29 teams.
Just where might the Bucks fit in that equation? “I don’t know,” said the L.A. born and bred Jennings. “I can’t answer that. This has been a crazy year, one of the craziest years of my life… right now I’m going home”
