Despite the Dallas Cowboys resurgence to football relevance, the Denver Broncos have dethroned the ‘Boys as ‘America’s Team.’
According to the new Harris Poll, the Denver Broncos are now the most popular team in the NFL. The poll surveyed 2,543 adults (1,275 of whom said they followed professional football) between September 10-17 and the Cowboys weren't at the the top of that poll for the first time in six years.
The Cowboys didn't even claim the second spot in the rankings as the New York Giants finished as the No. 2 team. The Green Bay Packers, Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers round out the top five. Bronco coach john Fox said he understands the rankings, but you don’t get an actual feel for the atmosphere until you are attached to the team.
"I think when you coach here or play here, you kind of realize the reach of the team. You always knew this was a tough place to play if you've ever had to compete here in a game, but the reach is something you see when you're around it every day.”
The Broncos are 4-1 and quarterback Peyton Manning is on the verge of breaking Brett Favre’s all-time touchdown pass record of 508. Manning currently has 506 passing touchdowns and the Broncos take on the San Francisco 49ers this week on Sunday Night Football.
The Broncos have sold out every home game since 1970 and trail only the Washington Redskins in consecutive sellouts.
