Carolyn Moos, the ex- fiancé of Jason Collins, told TMZ.com that she was completely unaware that her longtime boyfriend was actually gay. Collins made headlines on Monday when he announced that he was the first active openly gay male athlete in a major American sport in a self-written Sports Illustrated feature story.

"It's very emotional for me as a woman to have invested [eight] years in my dream to have a husband, soul mate, and best friend in him. So this is all hard to understand," Moos told TMZ.com She told the website Collins eventually revealed everything last weekend - just days before his big announcement 00 and said that his homosexuality was the real reason he ended things with her.

Moos, 34, met Collins while the two were both students at Stanford. She played on the women's basketball team before a professional career in the WNBA.

Moos played for the Phoenix Mercury, Miami Sol and Minnesota Lynx. The couple dated for seven years and got engaged before Collins ended their engagement in 2009.

Collins acknowledged dating women in the past during the Sports Illustrated piece. "When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue."

Collins spoke for the first time since news broke of his homosexuality with George Stephanopoulos of "Good Morning America" on Tuesday and specifically mentioned the decision to call of his engagement to Moos. "Calling off the wedding was obviously a tough decision," Collins said. "But it was the right one because I knew I wasn't getting married for the right reasons."

Moos told TMZ that despite having a hard time processing the reasons for the relationship's ending, she doesn't harbor ill will toward Collins.
