Today at 1:00 p.m. ET the Denver Broncos (3-1) will head to the Meadowlands to take on the New York Jets (1-4) in a matchup that, on paper, does not favor Gang Green. The Jets have myriad issues coming into this matchup. Their pass defense is ranked in the bottom 10 of the NFL, while Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has engineered the league's second-best passing offense so far.
Last week Manning carved up the Cardinals' secondary for 479 yards and four touchdowns, while wide receiver Demaryius Thomas had a field day catching Manning's passes; Thomas alone accounted for 226 yards through the air, including an 86-yard strike.
The Jets' problems aren't just in the secondary though. Their vaunted defensive line is banged up, and there is tumult in the offense as well. Quarterback Geno Smith is under fire for his inconsistent play, as well as displaying poor leadership. His backup Michael Vick entered the game last week but fared no better, and admitted this week he wasn't prepared to play.
With all that's going wrong, however, Manning is wary of the wounded and desperate Jets. "This is a stout defense; tough against the run, causes you a lot of pass protection issues, No. 1 in sacks, a lot of three-and-outs," Manning said.
"It's difficult for an offense because they give you a lot of different looks. It's a challenge for us in the passing game and the run game, handling just their physical talent and handling just the different looks they give, as well."
