Adrien Broner called out Lucas "La Machina" Matthysse after his one-sided win over Emmanuel Taylor, and it was the second time he had done so. After Showtime's Jim Gray said Broner "kind of" called Matthysse out, Broner corrected him.
"Listen, like I said before, I didn't 'kind of' call out nobody. I said, my next fight should be Matthysse. And he can get it!" Broner boasted.
Fans excited for that fight may want to curb their enthusiasm, however. Broner's trainer Mike Stafford doesn't appear to be in any rush to tangle with the Argentine knockout artist. "Right now we're just looking for someone to get it on with that's just like Emmanuel [Taylor]. We're just taking our time and picking the right opponents for Adrien [Broner]," Stafford said according to ThaBoxingVoice.com.
Stafford then said Broner, a three-division champion at 25 years old, is chasing more gold. Matthysse doesn't have a title on his waist, and two of the other champions, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, are friends of Broner's. The WBO junior welterweight champion, Chris Algieri, is tied up with a fight vs. Manny Pacquiao in China this November for the WBO welterweight belt.
"If he [Matthysse] can keep up the same pace as we can I think eventually we'll make that fight but we going for something else right now, but who knows we may take Matthysse," Stafford said.
"If he's in our way for the big prize we have to take him but ultimately we want the big prize we want a 140 pound belt and if he's in our way to get it we got to take it. We not calling out no names we just want to get to the top again and stay on the top."
