The New York Jets have contacted multiple teams Friday attempting to move up from the 39th overall pick, seventh in the second round, to draft a quarterback, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Jets used both of their first round picks on defensive players, selecting cornerback Dee Milliner ninth overall and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson thirteenth.

The Jets are believed to be interested in West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. New York debated taking Smith with the No. 13 selection before deciding on Richardson.

Smith was projected by many to be a first-round pick. With the exception of E.J. Manuel to Buffalo, no quarterbacks were selected in the first round of Thursday's draft.

Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, top scout Terry Bradway and an area scout dined with Smith last month on the eve of his pro day. Mornhinweg was "raving" about Smith upon returning to the Jets' facility, according to a source.
