Cleveland Browns linebacker Quentin Groves, who signed a two-year, $2.8 million contract in March, was arrested last week in Ohio in a three-day prostitution sting, according to reports.
Groves allegedly responded to a sex-for-hire advertisement, according to Yahoo! Sports, and requested "full service." He agreed to payment and showed up at the Homestead Guest Studios in Beachwood, Ohio where several officers greeted him when he entered one of the rooms. At the time of his arrest Groves was in possession of a box of condoms and $197.95. Groves has a court date set for May 10th. The Cleveland Scene reports that 14 people were caught in this sting.
Groves was a first round pick out of Auburn University in 2008 by the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played 16 games but started none as a rookie. He recorded two and a half sacks in 2008, and none in 2009 before he moved on to the Oakland Raiders.
Groves played in 31 games with the Oakland Raiders, starting 15 of them, and recording 58 tackles but proving a non-factor in terms of getting to the quarterback. He played for the Arizona Cardinals last season and showed flashes of life, starting seven of 16 games and posting the best season of his career. Groves had four sacks and 41 tackles, as well as a forced fumble for an underrated Cardinals defense.
In a statement, Groves said he "let down a lot of people" and apologized to his family, friends, the Cleveland Browns organization and the city of Cleveland for the embarrassing arrest. "I am committed to learning from this and moving forward," he said. Groves entered a no contest plea to disorderly conduct in Bedford Municipal Court.
The Cleveland Browns have declined to comment on the matter and there is no word whether any punitive action will be taken by the team against Groves.
