Former Middle Tennessee State University kicker Alan Gendreau is looking to become the first openly gay player in NFL history. Gendreau, who played for the Blue Raiders from 2008 to 2011 announced his plans to try out for NFL teams with SBNation's Outsports on Tuesday.
Gendreau is the leading scorer in Sun Belt Conference history with a total of 295 points over his collegiate career. However, he went undrafted last season, which he credits more to the fact that kickers aren't as highly demanded in the draft rather than his sexual orientation.
"Right now, looking back when I'm 40, I can't say I gave it my best shot," Gendreau said. "I can't say I really tried to make it into the NFL. Last year I did it half-assed. If I don't give it everything I have now, I'll regret it for the rest of my life."
NFL teams caught criticism when asking players about their sexual orientation during the questioning process of the NFL Scouting Combine in February, which may cause a problem for Gendreau.
