Three days after retiring from baseball, Derek Jeter launched his newest venture: a website dedicated to releasing athletes' "unfiltered" views to fans.
The Players Tribune is being described as a new media platform that gives professional athletes in every sport a way to connect with fans without dealing with reporters. Athletes will be able to publish their own first-person stories in the form of written pieces, podcasts, videos and more.
"My goal is for the site to ultimately transform how athletes and newsmakers share information, bringing fans closer than ever to the games they love," Jeter said in a statement posted on the site Wednesday morning.
The former New York Yankees captain admitted to being guarded with reporters and said he navigated through "the toughest media environment" by being careful about what he said and "my ability to understand and avoid unnecessary distractions. But the reason he is launching the site is because he believes fans deserve more from athletes than "no comments."
"Those simple answers have always stemmed from a genuine concern that any statement, any opinion or detail, might be distorted," he wrote. "...We just need to be sure our thoughts will come across the way we intend."
Jeter said there will be a "strong core of athlete editors and contributors" who will be introduced over the next few months. The next editor will be revealed Thursday, Oct. 2.
The Players Tribune has also launched profiles across most social media platforms and can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.
