Little did Rob Bironas know that whether he remained on the Tennessee Titans roster this season was a matter of life or death.

Had Bironas been on the Titans roster, he would've been in Cincinnati with the team, getting ready to play the Bengals.

But having been cut by the Titans because the team wanted someone with a stronger leg and because he was due a large bonus, Bironas was at home in Nashville, Tenn., where several media outlets reported that he was killed in an overnight car crash.

He was 36 years old.

According to USA TODAY Sports, Bironas was involved in a single-car crash on a Nashville street at 11 p.m. on Saturday night. He lost control of his SUV while he was driving at a high rate of speed.

Bironas' vehicle went off the road and hit several trees before flipping over and ending up in a drainage culvert. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

A police spokesman said no evidence of alcohol was present at the scene.

Bironas was as notable for marrying into Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw's family; Bironas' wife is Rachel Bradshaw, Terry's daughter. The couple married in June.

Terry Bradshaw was not part of Fox's pregame NFL coverage, USA TODAY Sports' For the Win reported.

Bironas holds the NFL record for most field goals in a single game with eight in the Titans' 2007 win over the Houston Texans. He also owns the team record with 11-game winning kicks, including a 60-yard against the Indianapolis Colts in 2006.

He is the second-leading scorer in Titans history with 1,032 points. It was USA TODAY Sports that reported the Titans' reasons for moving in a different direction this season.

Bironas had a tryout with the Detroit Lions last week, and USA TODAY Sports reported that he was optimistic about being signed this week.

Bironas also left behind a young son, London. His former Titans teammates received the news Sunday morning.

Punter Brett Kern, who was especially close with Bironas, got the news around 6 a.m.

"I really don't know what to say. My thought and prayers are with Rachel, his son London, the Bironas family,'' Kern said before choking up, as reported by USA TODAY Sports. "Just thinking about him ... Can we talk about this tomorrow?"
