The Atlanta Hawks are officially up for sale in light of racial comments by owner Bruce Levenson and general manager Danny Ferry and the mayor of Atlanta says he has already spoken with six potential buyers.

Mayor Kasim Reed said Tuesday that he spoke with six potential buyers and that this issue will be solved "the Atlanta way.”

Hawks Move to Seattle Possible When Bruce Levenson Sells Team?

"I have had conversations with no less than six prospective buyers," Reed said. "All six of those prospective buyers will have to go through a process to be vetted by the NBA. That process is going to occur very quickly.”

A total of 50.1 percent of the Hawks is up for sale after Levenson (owns 24 percent of the team) and his partner Ed Peskowitz (owns 26.1 percent) agreed to sell their shares of the team. Mayor Reed has said that he would like the landmark citizens of Atlanta, such as Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, to have a larger role in the team.

When asked about his status with the team, Wilkins said that he would “absolutely” be interested in having a larger role with the team. It is not known whether Wilkins is interested in purchasing the team, but he already serves as the teams’ vice president and television commentator.

Reed has stated that the city of Atlanta will offer any potential buyers concessions to keep the team in Atlanta for the next 30 years and said that keeping the team in the area is paramount. Atlanta will have $150 million available when the city finalizes the sale of Turner Field in the near future.

The Atlanta Braves are moving to Cobb County in 2017 and the franchise is attempting to sell Turner Field. When the field sells, Georgia State University football will call it home and it will also be used for student housing and commercial development.
