Tiger Woods' timetable never has been a conservative one.

That's why the announcement of his intention to return to competitive golf in December is bound to draw a bit of skepticism.

The New York Times is reporting that Woods wants to make his next start at his own World Challenge event in the first week of December. It would be his first appearance in an event since he failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship in August.

"I miss competing, I miss playing, I miss being out here with the guys, I miss all that," Woods said, according to the Times, "but I'm not physically ready for it yet."

Woods did say, however, that he has regained his strength - something that he said he did not accomplish when he returned in June from back surgery on March 31 to get ready to compete in the British Open in July, where he also missed the cut.

"I wasn't as conditioned as I needed to be, so as the tournament would wear on, I would get more and more fatigued and tired, and I wasn't as explosive," Woods said. "I wasn't as strong because I couldn't burn the candle at both ends. I couldn't lift the weights that I'm used to, or accustomed to lifting as well as playing and practicing."

Of course, in June, Woods declared himself ready to return. The latest wish to return might be his desire to help out with the tournament to increase the proceeds that got to his Tiger Woods Foundation.

Woods said his next step in his rehabilitation is to regain the explosiveness and conditioning he needs to make the golf ball do more while exerting less effort.

"Now I just need to get my fast twitch going and get my speed back, and that's going to take a little bit of time." He added, "I'm right on my timeline, so that's perfect."

Woods admitted his has not searched for a replacement for swing coach Sean Foley, with whom Woods parted ways shortly after the PGA Championship, because he still is working on his physical conditioning.

He also showed some restraint when asked about the 2015 golf season.

"That's all dependent on how I feel and how I'm playing when I play in the Hero World Challenge here," Woods said, according to Reuters. "I'm curious ... how I'm going to be feeling, how I'm going to be playing, and if I don't have any setbacks or any pain, then I foresee a very full schedule next year."
