Griffin suffered the injury in the first quarter. He was rolling to his right toward the sideline and fell awkwardly out of bounds without being touched. His leg was placed in a splint and he was carted to the locker room:

Griffin commented on the injury after the game and seemed to be in high spirits:

Gruden also weighed in:

Griffin was replaced by Kirk Cousins, who threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns in the win. To make matters worse, Redskins receiver DeSean Jackson suffered a shoulder injury and also left the game in the first quarter and did not return. He was diagnosed with an AC joint sprain and is considered day-to-day.

Griffin, 24, is less than two years removed from reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL. He struggled mightily in his recovery from the operation last year, having to sit out the final three games of the 2013 season.

Cousins was drafted along with Griffin three years ago and has proved to be a viable backup quarterback, though it isn't yet known how he'd fare over the course of an entire season. The Redskins have a strong group of skill players to support Cousins like running back Alfred Morris and tight end Jordan Reed.
