The St. Louis Rams solidified their defensive star of the future by signing Robert Quinn to a new six-year contract on Saturday.

ESPN reports that the deal is worth $66.575 million with $41.2 million guaranteed. Quinn already had two years left on his current deal, so this is a new six-year contract that will run through the 2019 season and will pay him almost $11 million per year. The deal is the second-largest in team history.

"My family and I are excited about this opportunity," Quinn told the team's official website. "I would like to thank (owner) Mr. (Stan) Kroenke, the organization, my teammates, coaches, and the St. Louis Rams fans for their support. St. Louis has become home for my family and I, and we look forward to being here for the long term."

Quinn is one of the top defensive ends in football right now. Drafted 14th overall in 2011, Quinn was second in the NFL last season with 19 sacks and seven forced fumbles and earned first-team All-Pro honors. His 29.5 sacks since 2012 ranks second to only J.J. Watt. The Rams tweeted a picture of Quinn signing his new deal:

Watt signed a six-year, $100 million deal with $51.8 million guaranteed on Sept. 2 to become the highest paid defensive player in the league. The Rams were able to sign Quinn at almost $10 million-less in guaranteed money, so it was pretty much a bargain for St. Louis. If Quinn had duplicated the success of the 2013 season this year, or did even better, the Rams might have ended up paying more for an extension if they waited until after this season.
