The Detroit Tigers (9-5) defeated the Seattle Mariners (6-10) in a game that lasted 14 innings on Wednesday night with the final play being one of the most dramatic. Tigers catcher Brayan Pena held onto Prince Fielder's relay throw to block the plate from Justin Smoak to make the final out of the game, helping the Tigers cling to a 2-1 lead and capture the victory.
Pena was also responsible for the Tigers' leading run in the 14th inning. The catcher grounded out on an RBI fielders choice that scored Matt Tuiasosopo.
Both teams combined for 40 strikeouts with Detroit recording 21 and Seattle totaling 19. This ties a June 2001 matchup between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres (both teams recorded 20 each) for the second-most amount of strikeouts in a single game during the Live-Ball Era (1920). The only game to feature more strikeouts (43) total was a 20-inning affair between the Athletics and Angels on July 9, 1971.
Drew Smyly (1-0) recorded the win for the Tigers. He was the seventh of eight Tigers pitchers used on Wednesday, entering in the 13th inning.
