As the backtracking of the backlash over the Ray Rice domestic violence continues, the prosecutor that handled Rice's original case says Rice never was going to face jail time for punching and knocking out fiancée Janay Palmer.

ESPN.com reported that Atlantic City Prosecutor Jim McClain told the Press of Atlantic City that his office's handling of the Rice case was done with "careful consideration" and that allowing him to enter into a pretrial intervention program was appropriate.

According to ESPN, McClain said the former Baltimore Ravens running back would not have faced jail time if he had gone to trial on third-degree aggravated assault charges. The incident took place in the early morning hours after Valentine's Day at an Atlantic City casino.

"Even if they disagree with why I did what I did, I just want people to know the decision was made after careful consideration of the law, careful consideration of the facts, hearing the voice of the victim and considering all the parameters," McClain told the newspaper. "I want people to have confidence in this agency, even if they don't agree with everything we do."

It is now a safe assumption that the police saw both videos of the Rice incident later publicized by TMZ Sports.

TMZ deserves praise for revealing what domestic violence looks like

Rice and Palmer both were arrested on charges of simple assault-domestic violence and were released on a summons to appear in court.

Neither reported injuries or sought medical attention, according to the original report from the Las Vegas Sun as stated by Sports World News.

It may be only a matter of time before Rice's own attorney, Andrew Alperstein, receives his share of the backlash for saying that the incident was a "very minor physical altercation" between the Ravens running back and Palmer.
