Prosecutor Gerrie Nel confronted defendant Oscar Pistorius on the witness stand in April, demanding that the double-amputee sprinter look at a photo of the shot-open head of Pistorius' girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

"That's it - have a look!," Nel charged Pistorius, according to the New York Times. Pistorius' voice, rising and breaking as he spoke, retorted, "As I picked Reeva up, my fingers touched her head. I remember. I don't have to look at a picture. I was there."

And here we are, five months later, just hours before Judge Thokozile Masipa is scheduled to decide whether Oscar Pistorius is guilty of murder. He is on trial after shooting Steenkamp four times through a bathroom door in the early morning hours of Valentine's Day, 2013.

Pistorius has maintained that he thought Steenkamp was an intruder in their Pretoria, South Africa home, and his insecurities stemming from the amputation of both legs below the knee as an infant led him act on what he felt were fears for his life.

Judge Thokozile Masipa has a tough reputation for verdicts involving crimes against women

The prosecution has argued that Pistorius intentionally shot Steenkamp after the two fought earlier in the evening, portraying the 2012 Olympian as a jealous, anger-prone egotist, the Times reported.

Pistorius faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years before he can seek parole, if he is convicted of murder. He still could earn several years of jail time if Masipa convicts Pistorius of a lesser charge of culpable homicide. He faces other lesser weapons charges.

Or she can rule him not guilty.

Masipa's ruling won't necessarily be the end of the trial. If she finds Pistorius guilty, he still can appeal the ruling. Recent reports indicated that Pistorius sold two homes to raise money in the event that he needs to continue to defend himself.

If he's found innocent, he could face a civil trial from Steenkamp's family.
