The Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles are both 1-0 after one week of NFL action, but the two teams almost partook in a trade that would have landed Matt Barkley in Houston.

According to multiple sources, the Eagles had made Barkley available for trade during the final weeks of the offseason and the Texans were the one team that was interested in acquiring the former USC star.

“Reports emerged last week that Barkley was available on the trade block but it seems talks never got too serious because he still remains in Philadelphia as the team's third string quarterback. Based on the low cost it took for Houston to acquire Mallet, it's fair to imagine the Texans didn't offer much to the Eagles in exchange for Barkley. It's also fair to imagine this because Barkley is only a year removed from being a rookie fourth round draft pick who still hasn't proven much at the NFL level.”

The Texans eventually added Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett for a conditional sixth-round pick. The fact that the Texans added a player like Mallett over the likes of Barkley tells you that the Houston couldn't have offered more than that same conditional pick to the Eagles. The fact that Barkley is still an Eagle tells you that Philadelphia must think higher of their former fourth-round pick.

Ryan Mallett did not see any time at quarterback in the Texans' 17-6 win and it is uncertain whether or not he was acquired to eventually start.
