The chase for the 2016 European Cup will take its first steps on Sunday. Two teams attempting to qualify for the tournament will do battle today in a match between Greece and Romania. The contest scheduled for 2:45 p.m. ET will be held at Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus and can be live streamed here free. There is no additional TV coverage for this match.
Greece head coach Claudio Ranieri had this to offer ahead of today's European Cup qualifier (via the Daily Mail): "I'm very happy to coach the national team of Greece and although I had other proposals, I chose this one operating on instinct. I came here to take the team as high as possible. Our immediate aim is to qualify for Euro 2016 in France. It won't be easy, but we have the potential and the talent to succeed."
"It's a great challenge," he added. "I believe in young players and there will be ample opportunities for them to show their potential. I am very interested in working with the younger players, who are the future of the team and I will be in contact with the clubs in an effort to work with them on a regular basis."
When asked about the captaincy for his squad, Ranieri continued: "I will be telling the players that being captain is very important. You represent the whole team and the country. The next captain will be selected by elections.
"The individual should have the charisma to be able to bear the burden of having such a title."
That "individual" will also be required to lead Greece to victory over Romania. Just don't expect him to.
Prediction: Greece 1-1 Romania
