Jets fans weren't happy with rookie quarterback Geno Smith last season for much of the year, as he finished with 21 interceptions and just 12 touchdown passes. However, down the stretch Smith's performance improved according to quarterbacks coach David Lee.

"Geno started playing quarterback the way you want to play quarterback," Lee said. "He settled. The more he played, the more confidence he got. He's not cocky, he's a humble kid, but boy, he's a confident quarterback right now."

Smith should also benefit from two key offseason additions, wide receiver Eric Decker and running back Chris Johnson. Right now, the bigger problem is in the secondary, where the Jets appear painfully thin.

Second-year cornerback Dee Milliner will miss Week 1 with an ankle sprain, while the man expected to start opposite him, Dimitri Patterson, was dismissed from the team after skipping a preseason game. Darrin Walls and converted saftety Antonio Allen are taking their place.

"I feel pretty good with my preparation," said Allen. "Went out there and had a decent day (Tuesday) ... just competed well, and hopefully I can do that in the game. I wouldn't say I'm comfortable, but I'm getting there."

The cornerback situation may affect the plans of head coach Rex Ryan, who has an affinity for blitzing. Regardless, Carr expects the pressure to be coming.

"He's got a great blitz package," Carr said. "He has obviously a lot of different looks that he'll show. Me being a rookie he'll probably want to show them all."
