The Washington Wizards have expressed interest in signing a certain 19-year veteran who is in high demand this offseason.

According to CSNwashington.com, the Wizards have reached out to 39-year-old Ray Allen to gauge his interest in joining Washington for his last season in the NBA. The report states that Allen signing with the Wizards is a ‘"ong shot," but the team would keep their 15th and final roster spot open just in case the future Hall of Famer is interested in signing.

“Allen coming to D.C. is a long shot at best, and the Wizards anticipate having the final roster spot open when the regular season opens to give them flexibility to make a move in season. They're not required to have 15 players under contract.

Since the initial feeler sent out by the Wizards, there hasn't been any follow-up contact with Allen or his representation, CSNwashington.com has been told. But Tuesday, it was made clear that the Wizards will keep the door open with that 15th spot in hopes of Allen, or a veteran of his caliber and skill set, walking through it.”

The Wizards are gearing up for a deep run in the Eastern Conference after having a surprising run in 2013-14 and have already added Allen’s former Celtics teammate Paul Pierce. Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld was also the Milwaukee Bucks' general manager a few seasons after Allen was acquired by the team on draft night in 1996.

Allen averaged a career low 9.6 points per game last season as a member of the Miami Heat after spending 2007-12 with the Boston Celtics as a member of the original “Big Three.” Allen is being pursued by both the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs as a last chance effort to win a NBA championship.
