The Oakland Raiders are the first team to pull the trigger on their rookie quarterback as Derek Carr has won the starting job and will start Week 1 against the New York Jets.

The Raiders made the decision official on Monday and coach Dennis Allen declared that Carr is the starter going forward, not a week-to-week decision.

"Not an indictment on Matt Schaub, Derek Carr is mature beyond his years," coach Dennis Allen said after Monday's practice. "We feel very comfortable with him helping us win football games. ... Derek is the starting quarterback.”

Carr will be the only rookie quarterback to start Week 1 for their respective team and he, arguably, was the quietest throughout the preseason. Carr, a second-round pick out of Fresno State, stole the show in the final week of the preseason as he lit up the Seattle Seahawks for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 11 of 13 passing. Add in the fact that Matt Schaub has tendinitis in his elbow, and it was a perfect storm for the little brother of former No. 1 overall pick David Carr.

With Carr at the helm, the Raiders have finally taken a step in the right direction for the longterm success of their franchise. Oakland did a serious amount of spending this offseason, but much more needs to be done on the offensive end.

Carr will have a subpar cast of characters to throw to, but the two-headed rushing attack of Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden should take some heat off the rookie. The Raiders could look to add, recently cut, wide receiver Stephen Hill in the coming days as there were rumors that Oakland was interested in trading for the former New York Jet.

Carr was seen by some as the most “pro-ready” quarterback in the entire draft and has drawn comparisons to Jay Cutler when he came out of Vanderbilt. The irony in the move is that Schaub replaced David Carr with the Houston Texans and now Derek replaces Schaub with the Raiders.

The NFL hasn't had a year where no rookie quarterbacks started Week 1 since the 2007 season. Carr is the Raiders 18th starting quarterback since 2003.
