Ray McDonald, defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers, has been arrested on domestic violence charges. He posted bail on Sunday afternoon.

The 29-year-old McDonald was taken from his home in San Jose into custody after officers responded to a call at 2:48 a.m. PT on Sunday morning, according to reports. He was in the custody of the Santa Clara Sheriff's department on felony domestic violence charges. Details of the incident are still emerging.

A local report from NBC Bay Area suggests that the alleged victim was pregnant. Other 49ers were present at the time of the attack, according to The Sacramento Bee. KTVU.com released McDonald's mugshot:

49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement that the team can't comment on the allegations without more information. "The 49ers organization is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously," the statement said.

McDonald's arrest comes just three days after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell implemented tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence. The new personal conduct policy states that a first domestic violence offense will result in a six-game ban and a second offense will result in a lifetime ban from the NFL. It is believed Goodell announced these new rules after facing criticism for giving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice a two-game suspension for a domestic dispute with his now-wife a few months ago.

While it is not yet known if McDonald will face penalties from the league, this incident continues a string of bad luck for the 49ers. Earlier this week, defensive end Aldon Smith was suspended for the first nine games of the 2014 season for multiple off-field incidents.
