Los Angeles continues a five-game road trip it is 2-1 on while San Diego proceeds with a 10-game homestand it is 3-1 on thus far and looks for its fourth straight win.

The Dodgers enter play in first place in the National League West with a 3.5 game lead over the San Francisco Giants while the Padres are in third place in the division, 12 games behind L.A.

San Diego took the opening game of this set with a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles in 10 innings on Friday.

Zack Greinke (13-8, 2.79 ERA) toes the rubber for the Dodgers while the Padres respond with Ian Kennedy, who is 10-11 with a 3.75 ERA this season.

Kennedy is looking to bounce back from a rough outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 19 where San Diego scored early but Kennedy struggled, giving up five earned runs and seven hits in five innings of an eventual 8-6 loss.

"It was a little frustrating ... our guys put up some runs early," Kennedy told MLB.com afterward.

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig has been struggling, and manager Don Mattingly opted to sit him Friday night.

"We do forget this is his first full season playing," Mattingly said via The Los Angeles Times. "He's kind of high-profile at this point. He doesn't get a chance to really step back. We're trying to get him a little extra time to step back and settle down a little bit."

Despite his recent slump, Puig leads Los Angeles with a .300 batting average. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez leads the team with 18 homers and 90 RBI while second baseman Dee Gordon has been a spark plug for the team, pacing the MLB with 58 stolen bases and 12 triples.

San Diego has been flanked by outfielder Seth Smith, who leads the Padres with a .282 batting average and 12 homers. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko paces the team with 45 RBI.

Two NL West rivals play the middle contest of a three-game set when the Dodgers and Padres clash tonight at Petco Park in San Diego.
