No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska becomes the first woman in the top five to be eliminated from the U.S. Open, but she will certainly not be the last at No. 1 Serena Williams looks to avoid the upset bug Thursday.

The story of day three was watching No. 5 Maria Sharapova struggle to compete, but eventually pull out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania. Sharapova spoke about the match and potentially being sent home incredibly early.

"Overall I felt like in the end I was in much better shape than she was and I could have played another few sets," Sharapova said. "Mentally that helped me a lot.”

No. 19 Venus Williams advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against 78th-ranked Timea Bacsinszky, but fellow American No. 21 Sloane Stephens fell 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to 96th-ranked Johanna Larsson of Sweden. This was Stephens shortest stay at the U.S. Open in her career.
