It's hard to imagine a credible defense for Jonathan Koppenhaver's alleged aggravated assault of his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and Corey Thomas. But no matter how heinous the reported actions of the former MMA fighter known as "War Machine" he does have a right to a fair trial, which his attorney is trying to ensure.

"The hardest thing for my client is seeing the responses from the media, the public. There's been a lot of statements on one side," Brandon Sua, Koppenhaver's legal counsel, told KTLA.com. "The media has done a good job of painting my client as a monster, but my client is not a monster. He is a good guy."

Sua told the website that a full statement will be released "when the time is right" and added that his client didn't do "anything illegal." Mack, born Christine Mackinday, suffered numerous injuries, which included two missing teeth, a blowout fracture of her left eye, and a lacerated liver from the Aug. 8 attack.

Koppenhaver was arrested on Aug. 15 in Simi Valley, Calif. After an appearance in a California court on Tuesday, he will be extradited back to Las Vegas to await trial. Prosecutors in Las Vegas filed multiple felony battery, assault and coercion charges that could get Koppenhaver a total of more than 25 years in prison if he is convicted.
