Veteran Michael Vick is disappointed with a recent report indicating that some of the New York Jets' coaches were disappointed in his effort in the preseason, saying he did his best in competing for the starting quarterback job which has been officially awarded to sophomore Geno Smith.

The report, which came out in MMQB.com, suggested that Vick did not show up hell-bent on winning the starting quarterback duties. The article titled 'The Franchise Back-Up' suggested that Vick wanted to embrace the role of a back-up instead of competing for the starting quarterback position.

"That's not true, that's not true at all," Vick told the New York Post after his team lost to the Giants, 35-24, in a preseason game. He said the story was far from the truth, adding: "Me and my coaches, we have great conversations, we have open dialogue, and that was far from the case. So whoever wrote that story, it was on the side of being very fictitious, and you have to come up with better stories than that. There are better things to talk about."

Signed last March on a one-year deal, Vick seemed content on letting Smith get the starting QB job. That could have fueled rumors that the ex-Philadelphia Eagle was not 'hell-bent' on competing for the said position.

Still, Vick said he did his best. "I mean, what did it look like to you all?" he asked reporters. "I did what I had to do."

Smith was named the starting quarterback of the Jets on Friday, and Vick welcomed the development, saying: "I think it's great for Geno. I knew the entire time that Geno was going to be the starter, but Geno went out and proved that he is capable of running this team and putting this team in a position to win."
