Miami Hurricanes quarterback Kevin Olsen has been suspended for the season opener against the Louisville Cardinals after failing a drug test.

2014 Preseason Coaches Poll

The Miami Herald and 560 WQAM Radio in Miami both report that the quarterback was suspended for a failed drug test and his absence cast more doubt over the position considering starter Ryan Williams is still rehabbing a torn ACL.

Coach Al Golden spoke to 560 WQAM and didn't rule Olsen out of the quarterback competition in the longterm. Golden said that this is the job he signed up for and that adjustments never truly stop.

“(I am going to) refrain from commenting on any of that as it relates to any suspension,” Golden said. “Anything that comes directly from (assistant athletic director of communications) Chris Freet and (athletic director) Blake James, that’s how we conduct ourselves.”

Olsen’s absence will be felt for at least one week and forces fifth-year transfer Jake Heaps to take over the starter responsibilities for as long as Williams and Olsen find themselves on the bench. Golden said he is pleased with Heaps' progress and is excited to see what he and Olsen can do in the time they will be given.

The Hurricanes open up camp on Tuesday and are expected to have Olsen, Heaps, Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier as the quarterbacks on the roster.
