Miguel Cotto dismantled Sergio Martinez in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden on June 7 and took his WBC middleweight title, leading fans and writers to jump on Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez as his next opponent. It appears those fights must wait, however, as Cotto may be fighting Andy Lee instead on December 13.
While that matchup could elicit groans from those hoping Cotto would challenge himself against the premier middleweight, Golovkin, it seems as if Cotto vs. Lee will not be a pay per view bout.
While Cotto was able to take Martinez apart, he was clearly a shell of himself and on unsteady legs after the first knockdown he suffered. In addition, both Golovkin and Alvarez have fought very recently, so the timing may not be right for such a big pay per view clash.
On top of that, there has been talk of fan fatigue owing to the high volume of pay per view cards in 2014. Canelo Alvarez has already fought twice on pay per view, Floyd Mayweather’s second card is coming in September, and Manny Pacquiao’s second card is coming in November.
The last time Lee was in action was on Cotto’s undercard. He fought John Jackson and was losing for much of the fight before scoring an impressive one-punch knockout. His availability may change though, as he’s set to take on WBO middleweight champion “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin on September 13.
