American golfer Dustin Johnson has taken a leave of absence from the PGA Tour and will miss the Ryder Cup as he will "seek professional help" for "personal challenges" he is facing.
Johnson finished 12th at the Open Championship two weeks ago and has won eight tournaments on the PGA Tour. Johnson released a statement concerning his status going forward.
"By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion," Johnson said.
Johnson will not be a part of the United States team for the Ryder Cup and Patrick Reedis set to replace him on the team if he remains in the tour’s top nine players. The top nine players on the tour automatically make the Ryder Cup team after next week’s PGA Championship and captain Tom Watson has to make three at-large picks by September 2.
Rory McIlroy Dating Irish Model?
It is unknown what is causing Johnson to take the leave of absence, but he and fiancee Paulina Gretzky are expected to be married in the fall after being engaged for almost a year. No date has been set for any potential wedding and hasn't been confirmed that it has anything to do with his decision to take time off.
The 30-year-old Johnson is currently fifth in the Ryder Cup standings and ranks No. 16 in the World Golf Rankings.
